Software download is any software that is made available for downloading purposes from any particular server. This means of downloaded software may be copyrighted or non-copyrighted work. Adware is software that can be downloaded free, but is ad-sponsored. Adware can provide a live feed of advertisements while the user is online or built-in static or limited advertising.

Shareware is software that can be downloaded for a free trial. At the end of the trial period the user is bound to either uninstall, or pay for its continued use. Some shareware programs have built-in mechanisms to protect the copyright after the trial period has finished. Some have crippled evaluation which gives the user a good idea what the software can do, without unlocking the whole program.
